Monoprinting with the Gelli plate at the Julian Art Guild

The Julian Art Guild invited me to present a demo on monoprinting with the Gelli plate.  It's a fun process.  They were so eager to try it that I let them jump in and give it a go.  Thanks to Leigh Bittner for taking photos for me.

Some of my prints made on the Gelli plate
Photobombing my own picture
The Guild members asked a lot of questions about the process
Process: first roll out some paint onto the Gelli plate
Select stencils or objects to mask out designs onto the paint
Arrange your objects (masks) on the painted Gelli plate
Add texture to the paint if desired
Place a paper onto the painted plate, rub to transfer your design and then pull up to see your print!

Printing on a Gelli Plate

Have you tried printing on a Gelli Plate?  It's an amazing surface for creating monoprints.

Below you can see a Gelli Plate on the right.  I have rolled out some paint and dropped a couple of shapes onto it.  On the left is a print I had already made which I will flip over onto the wet paint to print on another layer.  It's all about layers peeking through layers!

Here is the result.  You can see the original blue and pink colors showing through the yellow where the shapes had masked the paint. It is beautiful but I will add another layer. It is exciting to see what happens with each additional layer!

I rolled out another color that I think will harmonize with the previous layers. I created texture in the paint and added masks.  I pulled another print onto the same paper.

Love this!  I think I'll stop for now....or will I?

Finally finished the final painting of the dog trilogy!

Beau
What a great client!  She was so thrilled with her final painting that she actually gave me a bonus and immediately placed all three together on her mantle where they rule the room!

2011 Juried Biennial at the Cannon Gallery in Carlsbad

I was honored to have been selected to show in the highly competitive Cannon 2011 Juried Biennial!  Here are some scenes from the opening Jan. 29.  The show runs through Mar 18, 2011.  Click here for more info.   Some of the best regional art is being shown there so check it out!

My surrealists inspired "Exquisite Corpse."

Several strangers now have my drawing on their cell phones!  My friend Helen Wilson looks on.
My best buddies Ann and Donna showed up.
The opening was mobbed!

Chip...again

I think I am finished.  I've made some adjustments and added some "frosting on the cake" –– details like whiskers and highlights.  The photography is not accurate,  it looks so much better in real life!  I guess the camera has a hard time with the myriad of colors and the overhead lighting.
